Buying Gold in Dubai and Bringing It to Pakistan

The Dubai Gold Souk is a favourite of overseas Pakistanis, but whether the trip pays off depends on rates, VAT, making charges and Pakistani customs. Here is the full picture.

Why Dubai has the reputation

Dubai's Gold Souk in Deira and the newer retail districts offer huge selection, tight regulation of purity, and prices that track international bullion closely with modest premiums. For the large Pakistani community in the UAE, buying gold there feels natural.

Whether it is actually cheaper than Pakistan on a given day depends on the UAE gold rate, the Pakistan rate and the AED–PKR exchange rate. The gap is not constant — check both live pages before assuming savings.

VAT and the tourist refund

The UAE charges VAT on jewellery (on the full price or on making charges depending on the transaction structure). Tourists — not UAE residents — may be able to reclaim some VAT on eligible purchases through the official tax-refund scheme at the airport, subject to the scheme's conditions and paperwork.

If you are visiting on a short trip, ask the shop whether the purchase qualifies and get the refund documentation at the till. UAE residents flying to Pakistan generally cannot claim the tourist refund. Rules and thresholds change, so confirm the current process with the retailer or at the airport refund desk.

When the Dubai trip makes sense

Buying in Dubai tends to make the most sense when you already live in or are visiting the UAE, want specific designs or heavier hallmarked sets, and are buying enough that small per-gram differences matter — but still within personal-use quantities. It rarely makes sense to fly there purely to save on a small purchase once tickets and hotels are counted.

Compare all-in cost: Dubai price per gram for the karat, plus making charges, minus any VAT refund, versus the Pakistani jeweller's quote for the same net gold weight. Our making charges guide explains what to look for in both markets.

The customs caution

This is where plans go wrong. Pakistan distinguishes personal jewellery from commercial quantities, and allowances, duties and declaration rules change — verify the current position with FBR / Pakistan Customs before you fly. Carrying obviously commercial quantities, or failing to declare when required, risks duty assessments, penalties or confiscation.

Keep receipts in hand luggage, be ready to declare, and if you are carrying jewellery for relatives or a wedding, check in advance how customs treats that quantity. If in doubt at the airport, use the red channel and ask.

Sending money instead

If the numbers are marginal, remember the alternative: remit dirhams at a good AED to PKR rate and have family buy from a trusted Pakistani jeweller. No airport risk, local resale-friendly 22K designs, and rupee receipts for documentation.

Nothing here is financial advice — it is a framework for comparing options that many overseas Pakistanis weigh every year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gold really cheaper in Dubai than Pakistan?

Sometimes, for equivalent karat, because premiums are low — but exchange rates, VAT, making charges and any customs duty on arrival can erase the difference. Compare the live UAE and Pakistan rate pages on the day.

How much gold can I bring from Dubai to Pakistan?

Personal-use jewellery within official allowances is the manageable category; limits and duty rates change, so confirm the current rules with FBR / Pakistan Customs before travelling rather than relying on hearsay.

Can I get the UAE VAT refund as a Pakistani visitor?

Tourists may reclaim VAT on eligible purchases via the official refund scheme with proper documentation; UAE residents generally cannot. Ask the retailer to issue tax-refund paperwork at purchase.
