Understanding the Purity Marks on Your Gold

What does 916 mean? A guide to reading the tiny hallmarks stamped on the inside of your rings and bangles.

The Millesimal Fineness System

While Karats are the traditional measure, modern jewelry often uses the millesimal fineness system, which denotes purity in parts per thousand. For example, 24K gold is exactly 99.9% pure, so it is stamped with "999".

Common Stamps Explained

If you see "916" stamped on a bangle, it means the piece is 91.6% pure gold, which equates to exactly 22 Karats. A stamp of "750" means 75.0% purity, which is 18 Karats. "585" denotes 14 Karat gold.

Why Hallmarks Matter

A clear hallmark from a recognized assayer gives you instant credibility when you go to sell the piece. However, in Pakistan's unregulated local markets, unscrupulous jewelers sometimes stamp fake hallmarks on low-purity gold. Always test the gold before buying, regardless of the stamp.
